Artificial Intelligence: Trick or Treat?

web_ai-trick-or-treat
The word “Halloween” is a mashup of two words, “hallows” and “eve.” In 1785, Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote a poem, “Halloween,” which helped popularize the name for the Celtic tradition. More than 200 years later, the Halloween of days’ past looks completely different from the holiday around the corner. Even still, one fact is timeless—Halloween originated from a tradition of human storytelling that gives rise to the innovation economy that exists today. Every year, human technology advances faster, and with 2021 around the corner, we live in a world in which robots, artificial intelligence, social networks, and digital art are part of everyday existence. The Halloween party of the future is already here.

Humans are both impressed by and weary of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). When they hear the term AI they often wonder if it is going to replace their job, or if AI is even able to effectively complete the tasks of humans. Let’s break down the myths and truths of AI, or shall we call them Tricks and Treats?

Trick: AI Works Like a Human Brain

AI is essentially just a complex set of mathematical algorithms and data arrays. The majority of AI work is best done by people and AI working jointly. In the case of many tasks, AI can assist in getting a process started, but it still requires a human to complete the job by verifying the accuracy or providing more context or creating structure to the information generated by AI. The technology of AI will allow humans to spend more time on substantive work, rather than the portions that are considered “busy work.” It can now become a productivity tool to enrich the ability of humans.

Treat: AI can help start a task, but a human must carry it over the finish line

As we discussed, the majority of AI work is best done by people and AI working jointly. AI can assess and analyze millions of data points in a logical and sequential manner a process that humans find mundane and difficult to complete. In the case of many tasks, AI can assist in getting a process started, but it still requires a human to complete the job by verifying the accuracy or providing more context or creating structure to the information generated by AI.

Trick: AI Technology Learns by Itself

AI systems often incorporate machine learning, deep learning, and data analytics with artificial intelligence that enable intelligent decision making. This intelligence is not human intelligence. It’s the machine’s mathematically best approximation to human intelligence. These machines use the work of data scientists, research of analytics, and data sets to make human-like decisions, but this is “learned” by data sets being interpreted and used to make decisions. For example, at VIQ Solutions, our system learns by the edits that the editor team (the human element) makes. If the AI is incorrect, the edits notify the engine to correct the error.

Trick: AI Will Replace Task Oriented Roles and Jobs

AI manages more easily automated tasks while humans focus on the things that machines can’t do. AI solutions are designed to enhance decision making and accuracy and streamline the process. This is a result of an algorithm creating documentation from live, multi-channel audio and audio/video. The result helps a transcription team edit and produce polished, formatted, complete final transcripts within hours, not days. Overall, this can lead to maximized profits and efficiencies.

Treat: AI can make the workplace more human

By integrating AI into offices, human capabilities are enhanced. AI will not substitute or replace humans all together. AI does not automate jobs. It automates certain skills and traits within jobs. Tasks within specific jobs will indeed be altered by AI, in a positive way, leading to greater efficiency and productivity of humans in their day-to-day lives.

Trick: I shouldn’t trust AI because its unreliable

Every AI technology is based on data and rules and implemented by a company that includes human experts. Therefore, it is important to ensure diverse data sets, because all humans and data is biased in one way or another, this will help promote accurate outcomes. Human trust in technology is based on our understanding of how it works and our assessment of its safety and reliability. To trust a decision made by an algorithm, we need to know that it is reliable and fair, that it can be accounted for, and that it will cause no harm. We need assurance that it cannot be tampered with and that the system itself is secure, that the AI provider is secure, and that we trust that said provider.

Treat: AI is reliable, for example in the industry of transcription services

Transcription services in industries like law enforcement, insurance, courts, media, corporate finance and politics can greatly benefit from AI and Machine Learning. The demand for transcription in these industries has increased in the past years. AI and ML technologies coupled with human intelligence can streamline operations and intelligent automation to inform better decision making. The human element helps disambiguate audio, by understanding the context, something that AI alone can’t achieve. The algorithms that comprise AI are getting better and focused on specific areas where machines will perform repetitive analytics. In the end it is people who manage these machines and ensure that the statistics, the weights and the results are acceptable.

Don’t be spooked by the possibilities that AI can bring to your transcription process. Contact VIQ Solutions to learn more.
