Traditional Transcriptionist Role
With many industries experiencing delays due to personnel shortages, companies are choosing to outsource the creation of the verbatim record to experienced transcriptionists. This is possible using the latest digital recording technology. Transcriptionists work from audio of previously recorded events and can stop and rewind unclear recordings to increase the accuracy of the verbatim transcription.
Transcriptionists use a PC with security protocols installed and special software to transform audio speech recordings to text. They also need to be proficient with audio/video devices and a foot pedal.
Enter the Editor
Editors like transcriptionist will listen to audio, but with the goal of editing an automated transcript that has been generated “on-demand” or “instantly” using Artificial Intelligence. The role of the editor is to ensure accuracy of the document by comparing the audio file to the electronic draft to identify and edit any discrepancies.
Like transcriptionist, editors use a PC with security protocols installed and special software. They also need to be proficient with audio/video devices, and a foot pedal. Additionally, there are several shortcuts and “hot keys” that editors utilize to improve speed and efficiency.
The digital shift is putting editors in demand.
With digital transformation underway, many transcriptionists are transitioning to editors. We spoke to a transcriptionist making the transition.
“I trusted that if I kept with it, the process would get easier, and my minutes would increase. I did find this to be true. Slowly the editing process began to become easier as I learned some important hot keys that helped speed up the editing process. The quality of the audios and how the foot pedal works with the audio plays a significant role in whether the editing of a job is smooth or cumbersome. But learning those hot keys and becoming comfortable with them was a definite game-changer when it came to speeding up the process.”
